The reason why teenagers choose to cyberbully others is unknown, although there are several theories. An article called “Delete Cyberbullying- Why Do People Cyberbully?” discusses several reasons of why people may cyberbully. Two types of teenagers could cyberbully, popular kids and kids who are less socially successful. For popular kids, they may cyberbully because they think it will help them stay popular or powerful. For kids who are less socially successful, they may cyberbully because it helps them cope with low self-esteem, it helps them fit in with their peers, and they often have trouble emphasizing. For both of these types of students, they may fall into peer pressure and cyberbully because they think it will make their friends think they are “cool.” Cyberbullying appeals to teens because they can remain anonymous. They are able to hide behind a computer screen and harass their peers without the fear of consequences.
